Coroner Jim Allmon said Tuesday that William Jeffery, 66, of Chatham was identified a the victim wo died following a car-train crash near Virden
According to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department, Jeffery died at the scene. The truck’s 31-year-old female occupant was transferred to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to the sheriff’s office, a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train was heading northwest on the rails around the 8700 block of Macoupin County Line Road in Sangamon County when Jeffery attempted to cross the tracks in front of the train. After the crash, the truck caught fire.
