Officials are investigating after two people died and two children injured following Springfield murder-suicide. According to Jim Leydon, a spokesman for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, Springfield Police were called to 174 Berkshire Avenue at around 2:40 on Monday following reports of gunfire.
When they arrived and went into a first-floor apartment, they discovered Springfield resident Victor Nieves, 34, dead on the floor. Along with a dead dog, investigators also discovered Kim Fairbanks, 52, of Springfield, dead.
During a check of the property, authorities entered a bedroom and discovered three children aged 12, 10, and 5, two of whom looked to have gunshot wounds. The three siblings were all brought to Baystate Medical Center.
The 10-year-old girl was shot and airlifted to Boston Children’s Hospital, where she is now in critical condition. At Baystate Medical Center, the 12-year-old girl is in stable condition. The five-year-old youngster suffered no physical harm.
However, an investigation by Springfield Police and the D.A.’s murder section has shown that Nieves, who lived upstairs, forced his way through his neighbor’s front door and began killing everyone inside before turning the gun on himself.
