Dr. William West, resident Ophthalmologists at George Washington University Hospital has sadly passed away. Dr. William West died by suicide. Family and loved ones are deeply saddened at the news of his unexpected passing.
Maryssa Mary Catherine shared a tribute on social media – “Last week we learned of the passing of one of our friends, colleagues, and union organizers, Dr. William West. Will’s death by suicide has left a void in our community that can never be filled.
Everyone who had the privilege of interacting with Will knew him to be a deeply compassionate and caring person, who always went above and beyond for both his patients and coworkers. He would often spend extra time to ensure that every patient received the care and attention they deserved.
Among his peers, he was a source of knowledge and support. Even in his final moments, his focus was not on his own pain but on the well-being of those around him. His dedication to medicine, his extraordinary capacity for empathy, and his profound impact on all who knew him will forever be remembered.
We are calling upon The George Washington University to better prioritize the well-being of its residents and to acknowledge the urgent need for comprehensive support systems to address the mental health challenges inherent in our profession. Will’s life and legacy must serve as a catalyst for the change he envisioned—a change that will ensure the safety and well-being of all those who dedicate their lives to practicing medicine.
At Will’s family’s request, please consider donations to The Dr. Lorna Breene Heroes’ Foundation in Will’s honor. The Foundation’s mission is to reduce burnout of health care professionals and safeguard their well-being and job satisfaction.
Please, if you feel comfortable, share my post. The world deserves to know.”
Our prayers and condolence are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
Police are currently investigating the incident to determine the cause of this devastating loss. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide without a clear commitment to safety, please call 911 or seek help from your nearest local hospital or crisis center.
