Newark, NJ – Hudson Catholic head coach Lamar McKnight, Darryl McKnight and Brad Cunningham were identified as victims of a devastating car crash that claimed multiple lives early Saturday morning in Newark’s East Ward. McKnight, who touched the lives of countless players and young men throughout his coaching career, was tragically killed in the accident.
Authorities in Essex County are continuing their investigation into the crash, which occurred near the Blanchard Street side of Raymond Boulevard just before midnight. According to preliminary reports, emergency responders were alerted to a vehicle fire in the area. Upon arrival, firefighters and police found a car fully engulfed in flames. After extinguishing the blaze, first responders discovered approximately six individuals inside the vehicle, all suffering from catastrophic burn injuries. Sadly, each of them was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial findings from authorities suggest the vehicle was traveling along the Pulaski Skyway extension when the driver lost control, causing the car to go airborne. The vehicle then plunged several feet off a section of the bridge, leading to the fatal crash.
McKnight’s passing has left the community in mourning. A beloved coach at Hudson Catholic, McKnight’s influence extended far beyond the football field. He was known for his dedication to his players, emphasizing discipline, leadership, and the importance of education both on and off the field.
The Hudson Catholic community and many of his former players have expressed their heartbreak over the loss of a coach who was more than just a mentor – he was a father figure to so many.
“Our thoughts are with Coach McKnight’s family and all the families affected by this tragedy.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet released the identities of the other victims, but the tragic incident has left many in the local community struggling to process the loss. The McKnight family, along with the families of the other victims, are in the thoughts and prayers of many during this incredibly difficult time.
