Tributes have been pouring in for Claire Butler, a beloved educator and cherished member of the Plymouth community, who tragically lost her life following a violent attack on the night of January 22, 2025. Claire, who was widely known for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those around her, passed away in Derriford Hospital after sustaining serious injuries from the incident. She was 49 years old.

Claire was a highly respected professional at the University of Plymouth, where she served as a lecturer in Adult Nursing before moving into senior leadership roles, most recently as the Associate Head of School for Internationalisation. Her commitment to fostering the growth and development of her students was evident in the many heartfelt tributes shared by former pupils, who described her as an “inspiring presence” and a “sweet soul.” Claire’s impact on her students extended far beyond the classroom, as she touched countless lives with her genuine care and passion for teaching.

Described as a “beacon of sunshine,” Claire was known for her generosity of spirit and her ability to make those around her feel valued and supported. Colleagues and friends alike have remembered her for her extraordinary kindness and for her ability to light up any room she entered.

Claire’s life was tragically cut short by an act of violence that has left her family, friends, colleagues, and former students in shock. She was previously married to Paul Anthony Butler, who has been named by police as the chief suspect in the investigation into her death. He was arrested later that evening.

In addition to her academic work, Claire was deeply passionate about making a difference in the world and remained committed to the causes that mattered most to her. Her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched, both professionally and personally.

Claire leaves behind a community in mourning, but her memory will continue to inspire those who were lucky enough to know her. She will be remembered not only for her contributions to education but for the love and light she brought to all who knew her.

Her family has requested privacy at this difficult time, but they have expressed their immense gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends, colleagues, and students.

Rest in peace, Claire. You will be deeply missed.
