It is with deep sorrow that we report the tragic deaths of Benjamin S. Jeffrey, 49, and Annasue Rocha, 19, who died in a shooting at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, on Monday, January 26, 2025.
The incident occurred located at Martin’s Super Market located at 575 E. Jackson Blvd., about 5:45 p.m. Monday.
Juan M. Sanchez, 54, who had moved to the Elkhart, Indiana area from Illinois within the past year, fired numerous shots inside Martin’s Super Market.
After shooting the man and woman, Sanchez walked out of the store, and was confronted by two Elkhart police officers, officials said.
Sanchez shot at the officers multiple times, and the officers responded by fatally shooting him
Annasue, a dedicated employee of the store, was a vibrant and hardworking young woman who had quickly become a familiar face to customers and coworkers alike. Her warm smile and infectious enthusiasm brightened the day of everyone she encountered. Annasue had dreams and ambitions, and though her life was cut short, her spirit will live on in the memories of all who loved her.
The violence that claimed their lives has left the Elkhart community in shock and mourning. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of these two innocent individuals. In this difficult time, we extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones.
Benjamin and Annasue’s tragic deaths serve as a stark reminder of the preciousness of life and the impact that a moment can have. While their lives were taken far too soon, their memory will continue to inspire and remind us to cherish each day.
We ask that you keep their families, as well as the law enforcement officers who were wounded during this incident, in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through these trying times.
A memorial service for Benjamin and Annasue will be held later this week, and further details will be provided by the family.
