Kim Bierwert, Smith College Athletics former Head Swim and Dive Coach has sadly passed away after a remarkable 40-year career leading the program. His legacy, built on dedication, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to his athletes, will never be forgotten.
Under Coach Bierwert’s leadership, Smith’s swim and dive programs flourished. His achievements on the pool deck earned him recognition as the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 2006. He also garnered the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Diving Coach of the Year honor in 1994 and 1997.
Bierwert’s impact extended far beyond the lanes and boards. A proud graduate of MIT, where he competed on their swim and dive team, Bierwert also served as the past president of the Western Massachusetts Swimming League and the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association. His passion for the sport led him to serve on the board of directors of the College Swim Coaches of America Association and the New England United States Swimming Committee. His contributions to the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Committee, where he served for four years and as chair for two, are a testament to his dedication to the advancement of the sport.
In recognition of his immense contributions to both Smith College and the swimming and diving community, a moment of silence will be held tonight at the NEWMAC Championship in Coach Bierwert’s honor.
Kim Bierwert leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of athletes. His commitment to excellence, his leadership, and his care for his athletes made an indelible mark on Smith College and beyond. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
