It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Akeela Clarke, age 19, who was taken from this world far too soon on the morning of Friday, April 5, 2024.
Born in 2005, Akeela was a vibrant young woman full of promise, warmth, and kindness. Her infectious smile and caring spirit left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. Akeela was not only a beloved daughter, sister, and friend—she was a light in her community, known for her quiet strength, strong work ethic, and compassion for others.
At the time of her passing, Akeela was working at the Walmart Supercenter in Covington, Georgia, where she was known by coworkers as dedicated, thoughtful, and always willing to lend a hand. Tragically, her life was cut short in an act of senseless violence when a fellow employee targeted and fatally shot her in her own home.
Newton County authorities reported that Akeela was one of two lives lost during a series of targeted shootings carried out by a coworker in the early hours of Friday morning. Law enforcement later arrested the suspect in Aiken, South Carolina. While the investigation continues, the impact of this devastating loss is already deeply felt across the community.
Akeela’s family describes her as a loving soul with a bright future, someone who brought joy and laughter to every room she entered. She loved music, spending time with her family, and had dreams of continuing her education and building a meaningful life. Her absence leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved her.
Akeela is survived by her mother, siblings, extended family, and countless friends who are mourning her loss and holding on tightly to the memories they shared with her.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Akeela’s life will be announced in the coming days. Her family asks for privacy as they navigate this unimaginable grief, and they thank the community for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
