It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Malik Murray, a cherished member of the Chicago basketball community, a proud DePaul Blue Demon alum, and a passionate leader and advocate at Saint Ignatius College Prep. Malik’s passing marks an incredible loss for all who knew and loved him — a man whose warmth, dedication, and pride in his community touched countless lives.
A graduate of DePaul University, Malik was known not only for his love of the game but for his deep love of people — especially his fellow classmates, teammates, and the communities that shaped him. His pride in his alma mater ran deep, and he remained a passionate supporter of both DePaul and Saint Ignatius throughout his life.
From 2017 through 2023, Malik served faithfully on the Board of Saint Ignatius College Prep, where his leadership helped shape the school’s direction and culture.
Malik was a natural connector — he celebrated people in the most authentic ways. Whether he was cheering on a former teammate, mentoring a student, or reuniting with classmates, he was often seen capturing and sharing moments on social media, spotlighting the community he cherished so dearly. His presence was magnetic, his spirit joyful, and his love for his city and his people unshakable.
His loss will be felt deeply across Chicago — in gyms and classrooms, boardrooms and neighborhoods — wherever kindness, leadership, and community live.
Malik leaves behind a legacy of generosity, heart, and unwavering commitment to the people and institutions he held dear. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but for the joy he brought into every room and the lives he uplifted along the way.
A celebration of Malik’s life will be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, his family asks for privacy and peace as they grieve this tremendous loss.
